october reading meme!
(not much to show this month... rl keeps me too busy smh)
BOOKS
Going Postal by Terry Pratchett. I reread this because I want to finish the Moist's trilogy. I love a good lovable conman protagonist! I love it with no-nonsense people (Adora) are paired with someone who is all nonsense (Moist)! I love the GNU plot, and how Moist solves things! I'll see if this month I have time to reread "Making Money", and then it's "Raising Steam" for December.
Oedipus Rex by Sophocles. Finally Actually Read The Thing. It's no Medea 😤 but I liked it. One of those perfectly orchestrated tragedies. You see the train slowly advance until its inevitable crash. A+
BOOKS
Robin Lives! This was both bad and meaningless. Terrible combo.
Zatanna: Bring Down the House. Much better, though I still want to reread the whole thing to see if it's just shining by comparison lol. I'd say it's an arc I wish had been longer, with a slower build-up, though, but I was satisfied by the ending's choices.
Leslie, M.D. That's how I've been referring to my journey to read all of new earth!Leslie's appearances lol. I've enjoyed the journey a lot. My favourite issue of hers is, of course, Batman Chronicles #18 (part of No Man's Land). Sidenote, at first it was strange to find out she came from money, because I had headcanons against it, but it actually makes a lot of sense and it makes some of her perspectives and attitudes more undestandable to me (I know some of you guys say "Leslie is the one person who's right", and in part it's true, but she has attitudes that counteract some of the popular interpretations of the character and I think that makes her interesting, and a good foil for characters other than Bruce, like Selina or Jason or Duke). Anyway, she's a great character, and I can't wait to use her more.
Sins of Youth. Wacky story arc where a mix of Klarion magic and other events age the young heroes up and the older heroes down, right as there's a lot of debate about the ethics of young heroes among the public (after a great, heartbreaking arc for Arrowette). The parts pertaining the Young Justice team, specifically, were fun and interesting -it shows their potential and possible evolutions quite well (though no one is buying how buff Tim gets, sns. Can't I have ONE (1) non-buff hero dude? Also ONE (1) bellow 5.10''? Looking at both him and Impulse). The rest had a lot of "kids be annoying, ammirite?" that had me rolling my eyes a bit, ngl xD. I think it was more concerned with being "funny" about it than with exploring the personalities of those older heroes, though some of them had a better showing (mainly Diana). On that vein, 80s-00s DC really needed to learn that I don't find sexist horndog teenagers funny at all, and in fact some attitudes will make me lose respect for those characters! But oh well. I shouldn't ask that much. I'll focus instead on how much I like what Cassie's arc as a prospective leader is shaping up to be.

One thing I really do love the Sins of Youth storyline in YJ98 is that really does show how good at Young Justice are at being superheroes.
Because all the adults get de-aged and it’s absolute chaos and they can barely keep their shit together and Young Justice wonders if they’re that bad and the answer is “actually no you’re not, you’re actually doing pretty solid for your age in experience and you’re being held up to an unfair standard that invites more criticism to your actions”
It’s also a fascinating exploration of how adult anxieties are unfairly projected on to teenagers and while they of course still have room to grow and change and mature, the kids are, in fact, alright and actually capable individuals who do need support and guidance but aren’t helpless idiots by any means

In Young Justice 98 comics Match replaced Kon for like three whole issues and no one noticed.
From Young Justice #17 when Cissie packs all her stuff from the cave,
Tumblr media
Till Young Justice #19
Tumblr media
And carried over untill this moment in Young Justice Sins Of Youth #1
Tumblr media
The person everyone thinks is Kon is actually Match.
And this isn't a one off thing Match did, it happened again in Young Justice #38 when Bart and Tim left the team but this time he was jokerized for some reason but the girls still think it's Kon trying to cheer them up (cus they were in a war the last issues)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Superboy comes back all confused because he was having a Heart to Heart with Supergirl on top the statue of liberty
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Match does this twice in YJ alone. I can only assume he's done it in other comics too. It's kinda funny but sad like no one notices?

Am rereading Young Justice 1998 (it’s been at least a decade, this is lovely) and just got up to Sins of Youth.
And wow, is it funny, as none of them have as much associated trauma about adulthood and growing up yet. They’re just scared of Nebulous Adulthood, not timeline issues or Turning Evil (again) or the world ending. Such kids!
Tim in Batboy and Robin being unsure if he WANTS to grow up to be Batman, even as the costume is too large for him (Sweetheart even DICK’S Batman costume would still be loose on you, Bruce’s is 100% too big).
Tim. Tim your position on becoming Batman as an adult has SO FAR TO GO.
The other completely Oh Comics aspect of the whole storyline is the decision that Wally just…didn’t get doused with the anti aging chemical that the other Fab 5 did back when they were baby Titans. So that Wally isn’t the only adult left on the JLA and so they can do the age split issue with Bart. But Wally’s simultaneously ON HIS HONEYMOON while all this is going down? Linda refuses even to kiss him? Oh 90s DC, letting your male teen characters perve on adult women but not letting Wally and Linda kiss(!) on their honeymoon as it wouldn’t be right.
(Also the contrast of Wally/Linda ‘this feels off’ compared to Kon/Tana with Tana DYING in this storyline? Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm)
Bizarre timeline issues due to other events interrupting your plot lines never cease to be funny.
Also I was laughing to myself about how much of the collection of comics and trades I own is ‘the Justice League get turned into kids (again)’. It’s a trope I’m NEVER getting over. Give me more of it.

Gadget Girl: Oh we were so misguided trying to protect the children. Woe is we, wow is we!
Me: You disgusting garbage waste of people threatened Red Tornado with taking away his child while her mother was in a coma. You tried sending an innocent child into the system while dealing an unbelievable amount of trauma on a good person. All the while you’re framing the ones you’re “protecting” to be awful people. You do not deserve pity, you do not deserve mercy, you deserve Red Tornado to siphon the air out of your lungs until you realize gasping for air that you are disgusting until he relents because he doesn’t kill, but then slaps you and breaks a few ribs so your last few months on this planet are spent in agony.

Attention: Bruce has indeed been stuffed into a too-small Robin suit and felt extremely uncomfortable.
That is all. Thank you.

Also pictured: An adult Tim who is a non-evil Batman. The rarest sight of all.
